New Design Museum

Last weekend was Openhouse London, one of my favourite weekends in London. My highlight this year was definitely the former Commonwealth Institute that’s going to accommodate the Design Museum in 2014. Apparently regarded as the second most important modernist building in the UK. (No 1 National Film Theatre, I don’t know where that leaves the Barbican).

The building will be transformed by John Pawson, and the surrounding development is the vision of Rem Koolhaas. The design team has been assisted by Lord Cunliffe, a leading member or the original architectural team for the Commonwealth Institute in 1958, and by James Sutherland, the building’s original structural engineer.

Apologies for the poor quality photos.

  1. Wish I’d known about this Paul. I have very fond memories of school trips here – including the epic ‘Simulator’ where you experienced heat, humidity, cold and even earthquakes. Not forgetting the model showing the digestive system of a cow…they don’t make exhibits like that any more…
